The IIT-JEE and its Importance for an Engineering Career Aspirant

In the present day world of stiff competition in getting lucrative jobs and also ensuring oneself a successful career, a professional qualification from a reputed college has become a necessity.

Among the professional courses in the Engineering stream, the education given by the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) is deemed as one among the best all over the world. This is evident from the fact that most of the IIT graduates get easy admission into the top foreign universities for their Masters Program. Also we find the top Management Institutes in India opting for these technocrats for their MBA Programs.

Admission to the IITs is through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and coming out successful in JEE is a hallmark of distinction a student can aspire for. Around 5 lakh students appear for this exam and about 10,000 are finally chosen. IITs are located at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar (Guj), Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore (MP), Jodhpur (Raj), Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi (HP), Mumbai, Patna, Ropar (Pun), Roorkee and Varanasi (BHU). In this group is also included the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

The IIT-JEE syllabus covers a vast range of topics (XI & XII Stds) in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics giving stress to problem solving skills. This means that there are plenty of concepts to learn and hundreds of problems to solve besides the preparation to be done for the school exams. For this a student must be on his/her toes, right from the beginning and should be able to do the balancing act. Starting the preparation early and in right earnest will help in mastering the subjects in a comfortable time frame and with ease.

IIT-JEE comes under a new pattern of testing from the year 2006. The exam is conducted on the 2nd Sunday of April. Candidates are to appear for two separate papers each consisting of objective type questions in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Each paper is of 3 hours duration. Both papers are held on the same day with an interval in between. The merit list is prepared on the basis of total marks secured by the candidates in all the papers.

All details regarding the JEE including the new pattern and syllabus etc. can be had from the web site http://www.jee.iitm.ac.in/main.php.

(I) The student should have 60% in the XII Standard of the 10 + 2 Course or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as special subjects. Those students who will be appearing for their Public Examination in the year of the JEE will also be eligible to write this exam.

(ii) The date of birth of a candidate (GE or OBC) intending to write IIT-JEE 2013 must be on or later than 1st Oct, 1989.

It should be noted that from IIT-JEE 2007 a candidate cannot appear more than twice for the JEE (includes the year of passing the XII and the subsequent year) and also cannot appear again if he/she joins IIT or ISM Dhanbad.
