According to the revised pattern of conducting the IIT-JEE in two stages from the year 2000, the first stage is the Screening Test which is held in April.

The Screening test will be of 3 hours duration comprising multiple choice questions (80-110 questions) in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Only those declared successful in the screening test are eligible to sit for the Main Test in May.

The IIT-JEE syllabus for the Screening Test covers a vast range of topics in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with problem solving aptitude being the main requirement. This means, that there are plenty of concepts to learn and hundreds of problems to solve.

STAGE I - SCREENING TEST : This test is normally conducted in April. The Screening Test will comprise of multiple choice questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The paper is of 3 hours duration with a total of 75-105 questions. The total questions are equally divided among the three subjects. The results of the Screening Test are announced in May. Approximately 15,000-20,000 students all over India become eligible after this exercise for the Main Test in May.

STAGE II - MAIN EXAM : The selected candidates are to appear for three separate papers consisting of numerical problems in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Each paper is of 2 hours duration. All papers are held on the same day. The merit list is prepared on the basis of total marks secured by the candidates in all the three papers.

ELIGIBILITY FOR WRITING THE JEE : (i) The student should have passed the XII Standard of the 10 + 2 Course or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as special subjects. Those students who will be appearing for their Public Examination in the year of the JEE will also be eligible to write this exam.
(ii) The date of birth of a candidate intending to write IIT-JEE 2005 must be on or later than 1st Oct, 1980.
